Did You Know About Green Tea and Prostate Cancer?

By: Gordon P Hall

When it comes to green tea and prostate cancer prevention, health experts agree that it may help. If you are looking for a treatment, your best source for information is a doctor of naturopathic medicine or an ND. They are aware of standard treatments, as well as complementary and alternative treatments. Many men seek these kinds of treatments on their own, but the greatest degree of success is seen when an ND is consulted and their advice is followed.

Prostate cancer has the second highest incidence of all cancers in males, worldwide, but incidence and mortality from the disease are highest among men living in affluent, industrialized societies. Because of this, it is obvious that environmental factors, including dietary factors, play a role in the development, progression and severity of the disease.

In some populations, where the beverage is favored over others, there is a lower incidence of several different cancers. That is what instigated the studies of green tea and prostate cancer prevention.

The active component in the tea leaves are believed to be catechins, a kind of antioxidant. Antioxidants of all kinds have proven to be beneficial for slowing tumor cell growth in the laboratory.

A diet that is rich in antioxidants may help prevent cancers of all kinds, because antioxidants prevent free radicals from causing the mutation of cellular DNA that leads to cancerous growths. Most of us know about the common antioxidants; vitamins A, C and E. But, practically every plant in the world contains unique antioxidants, with varying potency. There are even some amino acids that have potent antioxidant activity.

If you wanted to include all of them in your diet every day, it would be very difficult. Some of the plants are not generally eaten; marigolds, saw palmetto, red clover, nettle root, passion flower, algae and gingko biloba are examples. The solution is supplementation. It is an easy way to get vitamins, minerals, amino acids and plant extracts, without completely changing your diet.

Claims concerning green tea and prostate cancer prevention are considered verifiable by the US Food and Drug Administration. But, why settle for a single-ingredient supplement, when so much more is available.

There are specially formulated men's supplements that contain all of the extracts mentioned above, along with green tea extract and your daily requirements for the standard vitamins and minerals. It just takes a little effort to find a good supplement, because most of the brands on the market are just not that well-designed.

In addition to green tea and prostate cancer prevention, the FDA allows claims concerning breast cancer prevention, as well. Basically, the plant is good for everyone, as long as they don't drink too much. The caffeine content can cause problems. Health care professionals agree that drinking green tea instead of coffee is healthier, because the caffeine content is lower and the nutritive value is much higher.

If you continue to learn about green tea and prostate cancer prevention, you will find that there are lots of things that you can do to reduce your risk. It is well worth your effort to learn more. If you have two minutes to spare, please take a look at my website now.

Breast Cancer Diet Tips

By: Kirsten Whittaker

It's true, women who survive breast cancer and load up on nutritious fruits and veggies as part of a breast cancer diet (a whole lot more than the current U.S. dietary guidelines) might just slash their risk of a tumor recurring by nearly one third. This according to a just released U.S. study to appear in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

The researchers took another look at data from almost 3,000 breast cancer patients (average age 53) who were part of research that focused on diet and preventing breast cancer recurrence.

Half the participants were told to double their fruit and veggie intake to 10 servings per day, eat more fiber and lower their daily fat intake to levels under the government recommendations, a type of healthy eating that's been shown to lower the risks of developing breast cancer in the first place.

The other group was merely given information about the U.S. food guidelines.

An important distinction of this latest study was that it found the reduced risk of tumor recurrence came only for women who didn't have hot flashes (a common side effect) after their cancer treatment. Women who did cope with hot flashes after treatment were found to have lower estrogen levels.

"Women with early stage breast cancer who have hot flashes have better survival and lower recurrence rates than women who don't," said Ellen Gold of the University of California Davis, who was a leader of the research. Earlier work supports the theory regarding hot flashes and rates of tumor returns.

Researchers noted that vegetables and fruits act on suppressing estrogen (suspected in driving the most common form of breast cancer). They point to individual levels of the hormone as a possible explanation for inconsistent study results regarding fruits and veggies and reduction in recurrence of breast cancer tumors - some studies said they helped, others showed they didn't. It may be that differing estrogen levels in the individual that offers another clue to this discrepancy.

The team found that only 16% of subjects, without hot flashes, who had doubled up on the fruits and veggies had their tumors return after a seven year period.

Of those given only diet advice and information on guidelines, the tumors returned in 23% of the subjects. Women who had been through menopause lowered their risk by a whopping 47%.

The amount or fruits or vegetables you need to eat per day is well over what the U.S. recommended daily allowance of 2 cups of fruits or 2½ cups of veggies. You'll want to choose a variety of these healthy options, and look for foods grown as close to home as possible.

Be sure that when you bring these good-for-you treats home, you wash them well (with warm, soapy water), rinse and dry them carefully to remove pesticides, herbicides or mold.

Breast cancer is the most common condition, affecting women in both North America and Europe, and it is the second leading cause of death, after lung cancer, of American women.

Your lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is estimated to be 1 in 8, but thanks to today's treatment and detection options, your chance of dying from breast cancer is much lower at 1 in 28.

Now, with this research revealing useful breast cancer diet tips, even these numbers can be improved with the addition of a whole lot of good-for-you fruits and tasty veggies!

Prostate Cancer - Are You At Risk?

By: Steff Lim

Prostate cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the prostate. Prostate cancer is the condition in which cells of the prostate reproduce more rapidly than in normal prostate, creating swelling or a tumour. It is not the same thing as Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) or Prostatitis and having one of these disease won't lead to prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men after lung cancer and is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American men. Prostate cancer is also the most common non-skin cancer in men. affecting about one in six men in the United States. In The UK, the risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer is 1 in every 14 person.

In other parts of the world, notably Asia, Africa and Latin America, prostate cancer is rare. The exact cause of prostate cancer is unclear but for some reason, the incidence of prostate cancer is higher in African Americans (about twice that of white men), and lowest in Asian men. The cause of prostate cancer is unknown, although some studies have shown a relationship between high dietary fat intake and increased testosterone levels.

Apart from etnic background, family history of prostate cancer also increase a person's chance of having prostate cancer. A man's risk for developing prostate cancer is higher if his father or brother has had the disease. For that reason, testing is essential from when men turn 50 years of age and even 40 years of age if prostate cancer is prevalent in the family.

However, the main cause of prostate cancer is probably age. Prostate cancer is most often diagnosed in men 65 and older, although younger men can be diagnosed with it as well. Prostate cancer is largely a disease of older men and is rare below the age of 50.

Prostate cancer is typically a very slow growingtumor, often causing no symptoms until advanced stages. It is often known as a silent killer because it often lacks symptoms, so annual screening tests are recommended. If prostate cancer is caught early and before it has spread to other parts of the body, it can often be treated successfully.

The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test performed in conjunction with digital rectal exam (DRE) will usually show reliable indication of prostate cancer, especially when free PSA reading in taken into consideration. If the result suggest that you might have prostate cancer, your doctor will do a prostate biopsy to find out if the disease is present.

Biopsy is a highly accurate way to tell if prostate cancer is present, provided targeting of cancer suspected cancer location is spot-on. Once a prostate cancer is diagnosed on a biopsy, additional tests are done to assess whether the cancer has spread beyond the gland.

Cancer: Causes and Effects

By: Gary Kenneth Archer

Cancer has ravaged our western societies for many decades but there was a time not that long ago when cancer was not a part of our lexicon. Cancer is a man made disease caused by the introduction of toxic carcinogens, chemicals, pesticides, food preservatives and a host of additives.

Carcinogens attack the human cells attaching themselves to DNA and either altering cellular metabolism or the damaging the DMA directly. Normal DNA that is damaged and cannot repair itself leads to ‘programmed cell death’ a process called Biotransformation in which the damaged cells harmlessly become water soluble and are flushed from our body. Sometimes damaged DNA in a cell has no pathway and the cell has no choice but to become cancerous. Cancer tumors are formed when normal biological processes are hindered and the normally aggressive immune system is weak or has been weakened.

Some common carcinogens are tobacco smoke, asbestos (when inhaled), dioxins, radioactive material such as gamma rays, alpha particles (when ingested or inhaled) and x-rays which are highly carcinogenic due their retention in human organs. Also there are many natural carcinogens one being Aflatoxin B. which grows on stored nuts and grains. Another potent carcinogen is formaldehyde, which is used, in embalming and plastic making. In PCV manufacturing vinyl chloride is used which is a strong carcinogen.

Carcinogens are also produced by cooking foods at a very high temperature or by cooking meats until their well done. Some researchers say that the carcinogens present are so minute that they present no health threat. Others especially those in the natural health community say carcinogens in over cooked food do present a significant health threat and do add to cancer growing cells over a period of time.

The human body has a remarkable disposition to ward off disease through our built in immune system but a weakened immune system allows deadly carcinogens to get a foot hold in our cells enabling DNA damage. Acrylamide, a known carcinogen is created in frying or overheating foods such as potato chips, french fries and any other fried foods.

Smoking cigarettes and cigars may cause irreversible damage to human genes. There are over 4,000 chemical compounds, which are toxic to the human body and are carcinogenic. With all the education readily available on how deadly tobacco smoke is one would think smoking related diseases would be eradicated but that is not the case. Smoking still is a serious health problem.

With the advent of processed foods came innumerable additives that are foreign to the human body. Additives that add color or taste to a food and preservatives that unnaturally extend shelf life of processed foods. All man made additives are unnatural and may conflict with natural bodily functions. I won’t bore you with long scientific names, which can easily be found, on any processed food ingredient list. Suffice it to say all processed foods lend it to diminish. health.

Our water supply has been tragically compromised with the addition of chemicals added to the water in the name public health. Chlorine in massive amounts has been added to most public water supplies to kill off harmful germs when ironically it is the chlorine that is adding a foreign chemical in to millions of trusting people. Remember anything that is not natural in origin becomes a potentially dangerous ingredient in the ‘all-natural human body’. The human body reacts positively to natural wholesome foods and natural supplements and negatively to man made stuff that do not have natural ingredients in them.

In addition to harmful and potentially cancer causing preservatives added to food, pesticides and herbicides are liberally used to kill and deter insects and disease in our produce industry. These chemicals are poinsious to human consumption and studies support an increased cancer risk when consumed. As previously stated, any foreign entity introduced into the human body may potentially be harmful and increase cancer risk.

With that in mind one must place pharmaceutical drugs in the category of foreign material. Pharmaceutical drugs are used like eating candy in a brainwashed society. Every pill taken offers a challenge to our immune system and our naturally created normal bodily functions. Pharmaceutical drugs for the most part are a concoction of man made material created to mask the symptoms of a disease, to temporarily eliviate a medical problem. The pill inevitably is time stamped to ‘work’ or be effective for a period of time thus the masking effect wears off and you need to take another pill.

Our brave new world with boundless good intentions has opened up a Pandora’s box of genetic mutants that have cancer-causing implications. We are self-inflicting ourselves with poisons that immeasurably produce a hostile environment for our wondrously created immune system. Cancer in my opinion is a man made creation and could be eliminated if we all insisted, no demanded, that only all natural ingredients be added to our food, water, products, and medicine. Individually you can create your own ‘Cancer Free Zone’ by living ‘all natural’ and allowing your body to function as it was intended; “Free and Clean of Foreign Poisons”.

Cancer-Causing Tobacco May Hold Key to Treating Lymphoma

B-cell lymphoma is a cancer in which an immune cell reproduces uncontrollably. The particular malevolent cell has a unique protein marker, which makes each case different. Currently, patients are treated using chemotherapy and radiation with mixed success.

Personalized vaccines use the cancerous cell's marker to trigger an immune response against the cancer. Oncologist Ronald Levy of Stanford University says that these protein vaccines can be grown in tobacco plants with the help of a special tobacco plant virus.

Starting with a normal tobacco plant, Levy says all that is needed is to "scratch one leaf and add the virus solution." The virus infects the whole plant and in about a week "you can harvest the leaves and get the protein [vaccine] out."

Plants are not the only way to produce vaccines. Previous work manipulated mice to make vaccines, but the process is expensive and time-consuming. While bacteria may be able to produce the vaccines more quickly, they still require special incubators and costly facilities. Levy says that plants, on the other hand, do not need such expensive equipment so they are "very suitable for small batches of many different products."

Plant-made vaccines may also be more effective than traditional mice-produced vaccine. Plants fold proteins differently than mice cells, and they also attach different sugars to the proteins. Both of these might give plant-made vaccines "more ability to attract the immune systems' attention."

Levy and his colleagues demonstrate that plant-grown vaccines are safe in humans and provoke an immune response. They now plan to investigate how effectively the vaccines treat lymphoma. Levy notes the irony that the tobacco plant — responsible for cigarettes and, thereby, lung cancer — may now offer hope treating another type of cancer.

Bowel Cancer, Dementia - It's Belly Bad News

More bad news for big boys.

Research by from Manchester suggests that tubby men are at far greater risk of developing bowel cancer - the second biggest cancer killer after lung cancer - than women. A study of 221 previously published studies - 282,137 cancer cases in all - concluded that an increase of 5kg per square metre in body mass index equalled a 25% increase in bowel cancer risk.

The risk of other cancers was also up in obese men - gullet cancer by 50%, thyroid cancer by 33% and kidney cancer by 25%. There was also a slight link with rectal cancer, malignant melanoma, leukaemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

If that's not enough, research from the US suggests that a big waistline in your 40s could almost triple your risk of Alzheimer's Disease or other forms of dementia in old age. Indeed, according to the study of 6,583 people published in Neurology, a big tummy can increase your risk even if you're actually not overweight.

It is not clear why being overweight may affect your ageing brain, but it could be that the problems already associated with obesity such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol levels may have an effect. Also a lot of fat around the middle of the body may mirror the levels of fat around the major organs of the body including the brain.

In the study, which followed people from their 40s into their 70s, the 20% of people with the largest waistlines had a 270% greater risk of dementia than those with the smallest waists. But, even those reckoned to be normal weight using body mass index calculations had approximately a 90% increased risk of dementia if they had a large rather than a small waist while those who were measured as overweight or obese using body mass index, but didn't have a large belly, had an 80% increase in dementia risk.

In other words, a large belly looks to be as big a risk factor as being generally overweight while being both is very risky indeed.
