How Do You Drink Tea?

Tea, it's the second most consumed beverage in the world, beaten only by water. It has a place in almost every culture on earth, and has been drunk for what historical documents suggest to be over 5,000 years.

There are four main types of this beverage which are white tea, green tea, oolong tea (wu long tea or brown tea), and black tea. However, each type of tea comes from the same species of plant called Camellia sinensis, and it is the processing that the tea leaves go through which determine what type they will ultimately become.

Many studies show that there are a number of health benefits that can be obtained by drinking tea. This beverage has many goodies floating around it like antioxidants, catechins, and polyphenols which can shield our immune system, prevent certain tumor growth, and aid in a healthier heart. One study out of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, suggests that drinking green tea can help abate esophageal cancer, while another from Pace University reveal that drinking black tea can help destroy oral virus such as herpes, as well as prevent diarrhea, pneumonia, cystitis, and skin infections.

Having mentioned all that, the way we drink tea can strongly influence not only the health benefit aspects, but also another that goes unnoticed...the flavor benefits. Many folks drink tea simply because it taste great, and not just for benefits. I happen to be one of them!

There are two main methods of brewing tea, loose leaf style, and by tea bag. But only one method will give you ultimate tea flavor and benefits!

Even drinking white and green teas that are in iced tea form in bottles sold in stores does not provide the same taste and benefits. The reason is because tea bags consist of fannings (or tea dust) which happens to be the lowest grading of tea. All the natural oils and nutrients that give us that great flavor and health benefits are in little abundance in these dried up tea particles. And as for the chilled teas in bottles, well, they are loaded with sugar so noticing the subtle taste in the mix is hard.

Steeping tea using whole loose leaves brings out a whole new beverage loaded with more healthy benefits and much more flavor since these leaves still have most of their oils. I'll never forget my first cup of loose leaf, and till this day I have enjoyed over 100 varieties, with hundreds more to explore. Trust me, loose leaf tea is the way to go, it offers more varieties and drinking pleasure over any tea bag!

Now that we've discovered loose leaf brewing, there are a couple of other factors on taste. First, make sure that your tea is young, that is, loose teas are best enjoyed within the first six months of the flush. Second is about what kind of water you will be using to brew it. Good water makes great tea, so avoid plain tap water since the impurities will influence the taste and instead use either natural spring water (not distilled), or well filtered water.

Pay attention to the steeping time that came with your loose leaf tea since over steeping can lead to a bitter cup due to the excess release of tannins. Water temperature is also important! White and green teas are delicate, so be sure to let the boiling water cool down for around 30 seconds before pouring. For brewing oolongs and black teas adding boiling water is fine since the leaves are more oxidized and "tougher".

Keep up the 5 a day
  • Hide vegetables in sauces by pureeing them in to tomato and white sauces. Also in foods such as bolognaise, cottage pie etc
  • When you make a sandwich add sliced tomato, cucumber, sliced apple, beetroot, sweetcorn etc
  • Have a fruit bowl out so children can snack on it
  • Make foods in to fun shapes i.e. spaghetti faces
  • Bake your own crisps by slicing vegetables and potatoes, spraying with oil and roasting till golden brown for 15 –20 minutes
  • Make your own dips and dressings i.e. yogurt with mint with grated cucumber
  • Children love dips cut up strips of vegetables and serve with a Greek yogurt dip
  • Always serve one or two vegetables or a salad with their dinner, they may not like it but – be patient
  • Children favourite vegetables are peas or petit pois (small peas), sweetcorn (tinned is fine), cauliflower cheese, broccoli florets or carrot strips or French beans
  • Serve a few pieces of diced cucumber and tomato or cherry tomatoes with they're dinner or lunch
  • For desert make them a plate of pieces of apple, banana and/ or orange segments
  • Dried fruit is good for dessert or as a snack try ready to eat prunes, apricots, exotic fruit mix, cranberries and sultanas and raisins (no added sugar variety)
  • Keep away from processed foods. You could try to copy favourites i.e. fresh chicken chunks in crumbs (nuggets) or fresh fish strips in batter/crumbs (fish fingers)
  • Children love sausages but always read the label make sure they are not too high in fat and additives. A good butcher makes there own sausages high in meat content
  • Try toad in the hole or wholemeal hot dogs, sausages with home jacket wedges, sausage and healthy mash tower
  • A little tub of bran based cereal makes a good snack to take out (instead of crisps high in fat and salt)
  • If you don’t have crisps, chocolate, fizzy drinks and sweets in the house then they can’t eat them
  • Try to keep a varied diet even if it repeats i.e. fish once or twice a week, pasta once a week, rice once, beans once, chicken or turkey once or twice a week etc
  • Yogurt makes a nice desert but keep an eye on the ingredients label – Low fat often means hi sugar and low sugar often means high fat and enriched in vitamins can also be high sugar or salt, go for natural yogurt and add your own fruit
  • Keep away from carbonated drinks they are hi in sugar and have no beneficial health qualities what so ever
  • Do give them watered down juices with no sweeteners etc
  • Do encourage them to drink water it has been proven to increase concentration levels and improve health and its free
  • Do give them milk its natural and enriched with calcium and vitamins
  • Take your own bottles out with you and you wont be tempted to buy high sugar drinks aimed at children
  • For snack box ideas Try adding strips of vegetables, fresh cheese, wholemeal pitas, fruit, tinned oily fish, salads of rice, beans, lentils or pasta, homemade flapjack, homemade smoothies and juices, nuts and seeds, etc

Try not to use fast food chains, convenience foods and takeaways regularly. The food contains very little or no nutritional value. Often as not containing flavourings, colourings, E numbers and chemical food enhancers. All of which have proven to be a harmful diet long term. An occasional treat is fine after all children love them. Try other cafes, coffee shops and canteens for fresher same priced foods.

Each cell in our body needed water to live healthy. We lost approximately 3 litre water through the disposal of urine, sweat, and steam.

You want to be healthy and enjoy the many years of your life, and controlling your cholesterol is going to be a good first step in this long and healthy life.

What are some of the types of foods you should consider eating if you want to avoid all those bad cholesterols and saturated fats in your personal diet? High fiber foods are going to be good for your change in diet. This is going to include cereals and whole grain breads. Look to wheat or rye instead of white breads. If you like, add fruit to your diet. If you like fruit juice that is fine but fresh fruits is going to add more fiber to your diet than fruit juices will. Look for real fruit juices and not artificially sweetened juices. Do you like to drink milk? You should be drinking skim or 2% milk instead of drinking whole milk. Whole milk has a lot of calories, and a lot of fat in it that is going to be harmful to your lower cholesterol diet.

Try to stay away from snacks that are higher in cholesterol and fats, look to whole grain crackers that are going to help you keep your cholesterol in check. Your cholesterol can climb from those hidden things you don't even realize that contain cholesterol so read the labels carefully. Eating fruits that have the skins on them is going to be better for you then skinning a fruit, such as with an apple - the skins containt more fiber and also have valuable nutrients.

Nutrition and Vitamins for Your Eyes

You know that proper nutrition is essential to good health. But did you also know there are certain nutrients that help keep the eyes working properly and that help prevent the onset of certain vision problems and disorders? Well it's true and all you need to do to reap the benefits is make sure you eat nutritionally-balanced meals.


In the case of vitamins, the ones that benefit your eyes include vitamin A, vitamin C and Vitamin E. Most of the benefit to the eyes has to do with the fact that these vitamins are antioxidants. The body needs antioxidants to help ensure that its cells are able to regenerate correctly. Sometimes the regeneration process is jeopardized by the actions of free radicals. Antioxidants help neutralize free radicals which diminishes their ability to cause cell damage.

Age has a lot to do with the eye's diminished capacity, but free radicals do much harm to the eyes as well. They can cause damage to the retina, located at the back of the eye. They can also interfere with the lens. Specifically free radicals can prevent the lens' ability to deliver light to the retina. When the light cannot focus properly, the retina cannot produce a clear image to send to the brain.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin are two antioxidants that are currently being studied for their potential to protect the eyes. Let's take a closer look at the other eye-friendly vitamins and minerals.

Vitamin A

A deficiency of vitamin A is known to be a major cause of blindness. It makes sense then that the easiest way to prevent blindness (and also prevent cataracts) is by getting the recommended daily allowance of this vitamin. Getting enough vitamin A also helps ensure your eyes can focus in nighttime light. When deficiencies are persistent, a condition called xerophthalmia may develop with its characteristic dry membranes and thickening of the mucous membranes that line the eyelids. This condition can cause permanent blindness as can macular degeneration, another disorder that has been linked to a deficiency of vitamin A.

Vitamin C

Very high concentrations of Vitamin C are stored in healthy eyes. It's believed that vitamin C protects the eye from damaging ultraviolet rays. Vitamin C's antioxidant qualities protect the eyes from cell damage, including macular degeneration, by neutralizing free radicals. Vitamin C is also believed capable of preventing glaucoma and alleviating its symptoms in cases where it has already developed.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E helps to keeps the mucous membranes of the eyelids lubricated. And it too is considered an antioxidant so getting adequate quantities of this vitamin will help in the prevention of eye disorders and diseases such as macular degeneration and night blindness.

Zinc

The body needs the mineral zinc to assist with the absorption of Vitamin A. As you read above, this vitamin benefits the eye in many ways so anything that helps the body absorb Vitamin A also helps keep eyes healthy and vision clear.
